AI Skills Matching
Screening for talents has posed a major challenge for the Human Resources industry. The advent of the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) offered a window into the immense capabilities of artificial intelligence in the hiring process.
AI has helped to streamline the recruitment process by searching for online resumes and profiles using specific attributes and keywords that match the job descriptions for certain roles. The process of screening has been made easier with AI, saving tons of time and human effort. Screening is also devoid of the human bias that is usually present during the recruitment process and aims to level the playing field for applicants. Following the selection of suitable candidates using this algorithm, recruiters use AI to send messages to the candidates and to schedule interviews or conduct assessments with minimal human intervention and input. Responses to assessments can then be used to ascertain the personalities of candidates and how to fit into teams before physical interviews are conducted for the select few.
There are several methods of incorporating AI into the recruitment process. Some of them include:
i. Platforms that use codes or key names for vacancies and skills to match a job seeker with the desired skills to the employers.
ii. Location, certifications, education, etc can be considered by the algorithm in setting up matches to increase match efficiency and produce a higher chance of successful hires.
iii. Incorporating extended module services to profile and identify missing skills and recommend training to fill skill gaps based on demand. Special support modules can also be aimed at people with disabilities, migrants and other marginalized populations to increase their chances of matching their jobs of choice without the bias associated with human recruitment.
AI HR Systems
Following the successful hire of qualified candidates via an AI-assisted process, the efficiency of the recruitment process has increased talent retention rates in companies, ensuring that the best of talents are recruited by matching the candidates’ skills, knowledge and experience to the requirements of the job. This has led to an increase in performance and revenue per employee.
Challenges of AI Recruitment
Like every innovation, as much as AI in recruitment has improved over the years, it is still fraught with some challenges.
i. Cost: The cost of implementing AA is still proving to be an obstacle. For smaller companies, it is still cheaper to engage human recruiters to manually manage the hiring process. While the cost of AI might pay off in the long run for larger corporations, it is still difficult for smaller companies to buy into the technology.
ii. Learning bad habits: AI in recruitment is well embraced for the lack of bias, however, it has been discovered that the technology is trained to find patterns in previous recruitment processes which may include biases, if care is not taken. These biases may be racial, gender-based, or generally non-inclusive biases. However with proper monitoring and surveillance, this can be eliminated.
iii. Data: In order to ensure an efficient hiring process, it is important to gather a huge amount of data to create a reliable database for hiring. This process can take a while and many mistakes may be made while the hiring process is being perfected.
iv. Lack of human touch: Human soft skills are still important in the hiring process. Automated responses and chat bots may sound mechanical and unfeeling in certain situations and the advancement of AI has not grown to cover these skills.
The inclusion of artificial intelligence in the evolution of the hiring process is a huge leap towards the future of labour - highly automated processes that will require minimal human intervention.
